If you ever lose a tooth in an accident or so, these steps can help you save that tooth and hopefully get it back where it belongs. The first thing to know is to pick up the tooth by the crown, or the top part of the tooth. Try not to pick it up by the roots. Be sure to gently wipe the dirt off the tooth, as keeping it clean may be important for what you may have to do next.

In order to save the tooth, you need to keep it alive, which keeping it moist with saliva can generally do. You can try to insert it back into the socket, remembering not to touch the roots, in order to carry it to the dentist. If you are uncomfortable with that, you can put it between your teeth and your cheek.

On the other hand, you can place the tooth in cold milk instead of your mouth. You can do this should it become difficult or impossible to put the tooth back in your mouth, or if you feel more comfortable this way.

Finally, it is best that you reach the dentist within 15 to 30 minutes. The dentist can take care of things from there. The dentist may also have a special solution that can keep the tooth alive for longer, if necessary. However, it is still best to reach him before 30 minutes elapse.
